Cancelled: Egypt’s Carceral Poetry and the Public Sphere
Speaker(s):Mohsen Mohamed, Sherine Elbanhawy, Adam Mestyan, Mesha Maren-Hogan
As part of the Trent Grant sponsored series entitled "The Making of a Poet: Five Years in Six Egyptian Prisons," this panel event will explore the artistic production of youth in today's Egypt with an emphasis on carceral literature. Such literature is being studied across multiple disciplines as well as cultures but as Prof. Elliott Colla recently noted, "You can't understand Egypt without understanding what's happening in its prisons."
The panel will begin with Mohsen Mohamed reciting one or two of his own poems in Arabic followed by Sherine Elbanhawy reciting her English translation. Our guests will then converse with Prof. Adam Mestyan (Duke University, History Department) and Prof. Mesha Maren-Hogan (Duke University, English Department).
Location: John Hope Franklin Center, Room 240 | Ahmadieh Family Conference Hall
