Eva Michelle Wheeler's research project explores how translators have approached, distinguished, and interpreted the terms 'black', 'Negro' and 'nigger' when translating into another language texts that were originally written or spoken in English. This research emerges from a preliminary study that focused on Spanish translations of the works of Malcolm X. During her time at Duke she will expand the study to examine the translation of racial language in a broader scope of literature and film, coordinate a symposium on translating race and other culturally specific ideas, and develop curricular material on translating race and culture.
