Humanities Unbounded Duke-Durham Tech Partnership

Curriculum Redesign and Open Educational Resource Textbook Project

To better support the learning needs of the College's diverse student body, Durham Tech faculty partnered with Duke graduate students to restructure schedules, redesign curriculum courses, and develop Open Educational Resources (OER) in preparation for a large-scale transition to a condensed 8-week academic term. During summer 2023, graduate students collaborated with Durham Tech faculty in five areas: Advertising and Graphic Design, Composition, English and Communications, Philosophy, and Spanish. The graduate student expereince at Durham Tech was supplemented with the “Experiential Learning Workshop,” a Duke campus-wide forum that provides students a support community to reflect on their time with their internship host, troubleshoot any issues that may emerge with supervisors or others with whom they interact, and discuss the implications of the experience for their intellectual trajectory and career aspirations. Durham Tech faculty took the foundation built alongside graduate students over the summer and continued the work on this curricular transition during the 2023-24 academic year.

Health Humanities Pedagogy Program

During the 2021-22 academic year, the Health Humanities Pedagogy Program paired five Durham Tech faculty members with faculty from Duke's Health Humanities Lab to collaborate on enriching general education courses with Health Humanities content. The program supports Durham Tech’s investment in enhancing humanities education for students in its pre-health programs. Additionally, a colloquium met six times during the year to discuss common issues in pedagogy. Research completed by two Duke PhD students during summer 2021 supported faculty work during the academic year by collecting materials for teaching courses from increasingly diverse perspectives.

Duke-Durham Tech Fellows Program

The Humanities Unbounded Duke-Durham Tech Fellows Program provided selected full-time Durham Tech faculty with additional support and resources to explore new/improved instructional approaches in one of the College’s General Education courses. Each Humanities Unbounded Visiting Faculty Fellow partnered with a Duke Graduate Assistant whose primary assignment was to work with the Fellow on course redesign and enhancement for the 2019-20 academic year. The Visiting Faculty Fellow also served as a mentor to the Graduate Assistant, sharing knowledge and experiences related to successfully teaching diverse populations.
