Mark Anthony Neal served as a member of the Steering Committee for the 2018-19 academic year in his capacity as Chair of the Department of African & African American Studies. He is the Founding Director of the Center for Arts, Digital Culture and Entrepreneurship, where he offers courses on Black Masculinity, Popular Culture, and Digital Humanities, including signature courses on Michael Jackson & the Black Performance Tradition, and The History of Hip-Hop, which he co-teaches with Grammy Award Winning producer 9th Wonder (Patrick Douthit).  He also co-directs the Duke Council on Race and Ethnicity and is the host of the video webcast Left of Black.

During the 2019-20 academic year Professor Neal was a partnering faculty member for Eva Michelle Wheeler. They collaborated around shared interests in the study of Black Masculinity and vernacular language.
