Candace Bailey will develop an interdisciplinary digital humanities project that will construct a relational database of women’s music materials in the United States during the nineteenth century, working initially with artifacts in the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library. She will apply methodologies of microhistory to make vivid the lives and cultures of women who have been largely erased from macrohistorical analyses but whose existence proves that many previously-held assumptions do not, in fact, hold up to scrutiny. Her research will guide the digital humanities project, provide the foundation of a new book manuscript, and direct a curated display in the Duke University Musical Instrument Collections in the Music Department.
