Victor Jeong is a Ph.D. candidate in English at Duke University. He is currently writing a dissertation which argues that early Christian and Catholic missions’ archives were crucial to the formation of East Asia as a religious and spiritual “other”—a conjured image that, when brought into conversation with the works of authors such as William Faulkner, Herman Melville, and Willa Cather, offers key insight into American literature’s mythopoetics at the turn of the century.
