William Johnson served as a member of the Steering Committee for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years in his capacity as Dean of Humanities. He works broadly in the cultural history of Greece and Rome, with particular interest in ancient books, readers, and reading, and with a general interest in how literary pursuits intersect with cultural context in antiquity.

He is co-director of the Manuscript Migration Lab at the Franklin Humanities Institute. During the 2021-22 academic year he is one of the hosts of Visiting Faculty Fellow Gay L. Byron.
