Denise Comer

Associate Professor of the Practice in Writing Studies and Director of First-Year Writing – Duke University

Visiting Faculty Fellow Partner

Denise Comer is a partnering faculty member for Visiting Faculty Fellow Collie Fulford, Associate Professor of English Composition and Rhetoric at North Carolina Central University. Professor Comer is both a teacher of writing and a scholar of teaching and learning.

Prof. Comer notes that Fulford's research on the literate lives of adult HBCU students "promises to make significant scholarly contributions to several fields, including writing studies, African and African American Studies, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Her research has several compelling areas of overlap with my own research, which includes a focus on writing-transfer-based approaches to writing pedagogy, especially with the goal of making writing pedagogy more available, valuable, and accessible to broader publics."

Both Professor Comer and Professor Fulford share the goal of exploring approaches to tailoring and making more visible writing-pedagogy practices and materials to adult HBCU students.
