Frank and Roberta Furbush Scholar in German Studies – Grinnell College

Visiting Faculty Fellow

Vance Byrd is the Frank and Roberta Furbush Scholar and Associate Professor of German Studies at Grinnell College. He is a scholar of nineteenth-century Germany literature who investigates how literary and print culture intersect with the history of visual media.

As a 2021-22 Visiting Faculty Fellow, he will be collaborating with Paul Jaskot, Jakob Norberg, and Wesley Hogan, and will contribute to conversations about the history and contemporary practice of commemoration. He will develop models for encouraging reflection on how intersections of visual and sound studies as well as critical race theory help us think about the politics of commemoration in new ways.

Byrd is working on his second monograph, Listening to Panoramas: Sonic and Visual Cultures of Commemoration, and a co-edited collection titled Queer Print Cultures
